It was the verticality of the buildings, the dominating towers and the palms that caught my eye and prompted me to sketch this scene.

You can contrast this view of Menton with another drawn the same day which can been seen in the Sketchbook section of the Gallery where the matters that intrigued me then were the open top hung shutters on the buildings and the low level arcading.
