Towards twilight I drew these buildings in Kirkcudbright at low tide. I was attracted to the way that the buildings contrasted in tone with the surrounding area and I wanted to express the interesting tones and shapes formed by the gables, punctuated by the disparately positioned windows and chimneys. I decided that I was not going to paint the scene as it was but rather a concentrate on a study of contrasting tones. I used a small amount of white gouache to paint in the ghostly chimneys and figures.
